Tattoos and Yoga - Fatima's Yin and Yang

FatimaPeople from all over the world are joining the community in Cabarete and among them are a lot of creative artists. We had an interview with Fatima Frias who just opened a new tattoo studio in Cabarete.

A: Who is Fatima Frias?
F: I come from the Philippines and I have been living in Cabarete for almost one year now.
I came here because I like to surf and I teach yoga, and I just love this place – life here is amazing!

A: Out of all the surf destinations in the world, why did you choose Cabarete?
F: I used to live in Haiti and I came here for holiday because I heard it was the best place to surf. When I first came here I told myself I will come back for sure. When I came back for the second time I had found the place where I want to stay. A beautiful place with fresh fruits, fresh air, simple life and good people, so when I came back the third time I stayed for good.

A: Was your first job here in Cabarete as a yoga teacher?
F: Yes, I was teaching yoga around town. That was the original plan but I had one tattoo client and people started coming after that.

A:
And this week you opened your own tattoo studio!
F: Yes, it’s called “Tattoo Cabarete” along the main street. I'm so grateful that everyone I love came to attend the opening party. It was one of the happiest times of my life.

A:
How did you start tattooing?
I started tattooing when I was 14 years old. But at that time I was just playing around with henna. I just enjoyed designing, art and drawing. Eventually, I went to university to study interior design and fashion. I dropped out of college, did a lot of other things outside art and ended up in the IT industry. My colleagues were all inked up, men and women. That sparked my interest again. So I approached a tattoo artist friend and former classmate, Chuffer Arellano, who taught me how to setup and use the tattoo machine, then slowly became a tattoo artist over the years.

A:
Where have you been tattooing?
F: I've been tattooing in the Philippines where I am from, then in Haiti at Ayiti Ink, and now here in Cabarete.

A:
Do you know the number of people you have tattooed already?
F: No, it has been a lot! Too many to remember. I am tattooing locals (also from Sosua, Puerto Plata, Santo Domingo) as well as tourists and people who regularly come back here to Cabarete.

A:
What kind of tattoos do you specialize in? What are your favorites to make?
F: I love watercolor tattoos, biomechanical and I feel like I have a natural instinct for traditional tribal Polynesian (Filipino) designs.

A:
What ink are you using?
F: I use Intense ink, it’s made from vegan ingredients, so it is safe for the skin and it’s what most top of the line tattoo artists use. My dad bought a whole set for me when I was in Haiti so now he's fully inked up like a Yakuza if you see him!! My dad and I have done 12-Hr overnight sessions on weekends working on a lotus flower blooming on his chest that connects to a koi fish on his shoulder and upper arm. It was our bonding time together.

A:
And what is Fatima doing except from teaching yoga and making tattoos?
F: Surfing, enjoying life here in Cabarete with my friends.

A:
Which is more important/significant for you tattooing or teaching yoga?
F: I think yoga and tattoo are yin and yang. Both are important. When you do yoga, you are more flowing and creative. And when you do tattoo a lot, your body and soul needs yoga to recharge. The energy goes back and forth. Making tattoos is more financially rewarding for me and teaching yoga is something I do to give back.

A:
Where do you teach yoga?
F: Right now I am giving private yoga classes and I also practice yoga with friends. Anyone who wants to have some yoga classes can contact me and we can arrange the time and place.

A:
We are happy you joined our creative, positive Cabarete community. Congratulations on your new Tattoo Studio and good luck!
F: I'm so happy to be part of this cool community. I used to just fantasize about this and now it's for real. Thank you!
