Healthy Oceans, Healthy Planet!

WOD CABARETE On June 8th the Dominican Surf Federation (FEDOSURF), the Dominican Olympic Committee and the Environment and Sports Committee published a joint article mentioning the practices that affect our oceans and relevant benefits that we all receive from. “Healthy Oceans, Healthy Planet” is this year's theme for World Oceans Day. Let us celebrate it for what it is: Pure Life in all of its forms.

International beach clean-up day

beach clean upThis Saturday 19 September will mark the 30th anniversary of the International Coastal Cleanup day, which will see volunteers all around the world helping to clean up their local beaches and coastlines in what is probably the biggest volunteer action in the world. Last year over 560,000 volunteers in 91 countries picked up more than 7 million kilograms of trash according to Ocean Conservancy, the organization that has helped to bring together beach clean-up volunteers over the past 25 years. The same organization also reported that last year in the Dominican Republic a little over 9.000 people helped clean up 30.000 kilos of trash.

Wasps to the rescue

Wasps to the rescue - Lifestyle CabareteAs unlikely as it may seem considering the bad rap wasps usually get, scientists have discovered a Dominican wasp specie, that could potentially save local plantations of pigeon peas, also called “guandúles” in Spanish, from the havoc the Asian fly wreaks upon the crop. Although the wasp has been around for a while, scientists have not researched this particular type of wasp before and the results so far have been more than spectacular.
