Find unique gifts at Kana Rapai

Kana Rapai Magnets Cabarete Dominican Republic

Kana Rapai is a little gift shop with lots of cool stuff located in the heart of Cabarete. The shop is full of fridge magnets, purses, jewelry, statues, paintings and anything else imaginable. Most of it is upcycled made from can lids, bikini straps, jeans, milk cartons, records, machinery parts and so much more, artfully transformed into fun and colorful gifts. Very often it’s only when you look more closely that you realize that the raw materials used are things you would normally throw away.

Duarte Day: 26 January

Pablo Duarte - one of the founding fathers of the Dominican Republic

Dominicans love days off and will take any opportunity to crank up the music, lounge on the beach with cold beers or dance the night away. The day off on 26th of January, however, is a more serious affair, at least in Santo Domingo. This is the birth date of Juan Pablo Duarte, considered the father of Dominican independence and one of the founding fathers of the Dominican Republic. The date also marks the beginning of the Mes de la Patria (Month of the Fatherland) .

Revive plants with seaweeds

Seaweed on the beach, Cabarete, Dominican Republic

These last few days Cabarete beach has been getting its fair share of washed up seaweed. Most hotels have been hiring extra people and on occasion an excavator to shovel all the seaweed away from the shoreline and into big holes. But where does it come from and can’t better things be done with it than bury it?

North Coast jewels: Playa Preciosa

North Coast jewel Playa Preciosa

Playa Preciosa is true to its name with gold-colored sand, palm trees lining the beach and absolute solitude. Most people overlook this beautiful beach and go to nearby Playa Grande instead, which unlike Preciosa features little restaurants, vendors and musicians.

If, however, you prefer to enjoy your slice of paradise privately and don’t mind bringing a cooler with the necessary refreshments and snacks, you have found your next destination. Especially on weekdays this beach is nearly always deserted and the views are stunning.
