How to do a... one foot off

Damien one foot kiteboardingThe one foot off is the beginning of making those aerial tricks look really cool and is great fun to do! Jump, grab the nose of your board and take out your front foot, do a backloop, grab the tail of your board and take out your back foot… the number of combinations is unlimited. Get good at this and you can progress to grabbing the board while you take both feet out of the straps. This week we’ll look at a normal jump with the back foot off.

Level: intermediate

Necessary skills: Before trying this trick you must be able to do a tail grab perfectly, including the landing part. If you’re not 100% comfortable with a tail grab, practice more. Only once you’re totally fine with the basic trick, you can add to your style, in this case taking out one foot from the straps.

Wind and gear: As always, before attempting any type of trick make sure that the wind is not too strong. Being overpowered while attempting a new trick is a sure way to hurting yourself. Use the kite you usually ride with, as well as the same settings.

Tips before trying: Before attempting this trick do a couple of tail grabs while jumping high. This will boost your confidence. Once you’re good and ready to try this trick, either wiggle your back foot out of the strap a little before you take off, or loosen your straps a bit, so your foot will come out easily. Be sure to loosen both straps in such a way that you can always take out either foot. The worst thing that can happen is if you land hard with one foot stuck in a strap. This can lead to all kinds of horrible injuries.

Tips
•    On your first attempts, aim just to get your foot out of the pad. Once you’re more confident start extending your leg. To make the trick look its best, stretch your foot as well as you extend your leg.

Common mistakes
•    You keep your leg extended for too long and don’t have the time to put your foot back into the strap before landing.
•    You don’t keep your foot out long enough. By putting it back into the strap too early you’re more prone to losing your balance, which means you can’t land your trick
•    Your straps are too tight so it’s hard to take out your foot or to put it back in.

Once you’ve mastered the one foot off, start doing variations. Take your front foot out while you grab the tail, take your front foot out while you do a backloop indie grab… the options are nearly endless.

Have fun and see you on the water!
